Sand In The City

The City of Subdued Excitement

This is was the 3rd year of this sand sculpting event where teams get together with tons of sand and compete for the "Golden Shovel Award". I believe the sculpturer's have only 6 or so hours to complete their works of art on Saturday and voting takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Votes are cast from on-lookers. You can buy votes for a $1 per vote and put your token in a box next to the sculpture you want to win.

Meanwhile, there are food venues, a huge sandbox that the kids can play in and make their own masterpieces and live entertainment.

The event this year was a lot fun and the sculptures "very interesting"!

The event takes place at the Port of Bellingham in front of the Harbor Center Building on Roeder Avenue in August.

Scroll down and see this years sculptures and vote for your favorite! (Just for fun!)

This was an interesting sculpture. We saw it first as we went in on Sunday and they were still working on it. I don't think they were in the contest. This one was done by the Port of Bellingham, I read on the back of the sculpture.

This "Orca & kayak" sand sculpture was nicely thought out and done by Bellingham Cold Storage. When we left they were winning by a land slide! (Sorry about the pun...)

And then there was mine (below)...second day into it. As you can see, my "creative juices" were really flowing! Actually, I couldn't waste a good pile of sand sitting there and not do something with it...
