Raptor Ridge Trail

Raptor Ridge Trail on the Chuckanut's certainly could be the most under rated hiking trail in Bellingham, WA. Understandable. The trail isn't as popular and challenging as the Oyster Dome Trail, but the views hiking up along the way and the rewarded view when you get there is certainly as breath-taking!

No, it's not quite as popular, but it is a lesser trail traveled on, so those who may want more serenity in their hiking experience may find this trail just right for you!

You can access the Raptor Ridge Trail by starting at the Hemlock Trail trailhead off of Chuckanut Drive (Hwy. 11) south out of Fairhaven. From here one can actually access virtually all the trails on Chuckanut Mountain. The whole trail from start to finish is a fairly easy to moderate hike. Perfect for a nice relaxing walk in the woods when you need to just get out and stretch your legs and get in a bit of excercise.

All along the way you'll be treated to many of natures' treasure's including bubbling streams, old-growth fir trees, moss-covered rock walls, and this refreshingly inviting waterfall which, by the way, the dog will truely enjoy. That is, if you bring your dog on this particular pet-friendly hike!

One aspect of this trail that may truely impress you is the use of the natural features of the landscape which are incorporated into the trail layout as it meandors along, beside and even underneath some truely amazing Chuckanut sandstone formations. One of my most favorite was this section of trail that utilized a "naturally cut stairway" to get over and around some very large rocks just off of the Hemlock Trail heading to Raptor Ridge Trail overlook.

Overall, the beauty, serenity and solitude to be found here, once again highlights and showcases another piece of what is truely "God's country" that can only be found on these roads less traveled...
