Lummi Island

Of the San Juan Islands

Lummi Island is one of over dozens of islands that make up the Puget Sound area of the San Juan Islands. It is the one we see over-looking Bellingham Bay from Bellingham, WA.

lummi-island My husband and I couldn't have picked a more perfect day to explore the island more up close and personal. We pulled our boat from Sudden Valley to Bellingham Bay mid-morning and dropped her in at the marina. We are always fascinated by such beautiful scenery from the bay. It just never gets old. It's so pretty even with it being a bit hazzy. But as we come out of the marina into the bay, the beauty of Bellingham, WA and Mount Baker looking over her...it is really pretty awesome!

As we head for Lummi Island, you can see how calm the waters are! It was absolutely a perfect day to get out and do some exploring. We went over to the south and west of the island to start our exploring.

We weren't the only ones out on the bay, of course. Many other boaters and sailors took advantage of the perfect weather. It takes us only around 5 or 10 minutes to get out to Lummi. About half way out I finally let my huband kick it in gear and zoomed on out because it's not really that far away. I just wanted to savor everything!

Since we got on the other side of the bay around Lummi, we were greeted with sea puppies! They are so cute! The one looked like he was glad to see us. It looked as if he was waving "hello" at us! More sea puppies were swimming around all over the bay that day. It was hard to get a shot of them, though. They were quick to dive back in and look for food I imagined...

It took us awhile to get up to the northern part of Lummi Island. The waters were a bit more choppy for our small boat, so we decided to slow down and take our time. We weren't in a big hurry anyway.

lummi-island-ferry It seemed like maybe an hour and we were going around the north side of the island where there the residents live. They have a real nice beachy bay front. When we come around back to the east side of the island, Bellingham Bay was still very calm.

If you don't have a boat and you want to visit the island, you take the Lummi Island Ferry. Click on the link and it will open a new window and you can find the ferry schedule's and updated rates information.

As you can see from just our trip around Lummi, there are islands upon islands to explore...so we will go explore another island soon as the weather in Bellingham and time off from work both permit. Stay tuned and follow along with us on our island jumping journeys!
