More Tips On The Green
There are certain rules you are expected to follow when your ball is on or near the green according to Wikipedia.
For instance, suppose a player hits his or her ball into a sand trap not far from the pin. Another player lands their ball on the green, but it is several feet further away from the pin than the first ball. Who shoots first?
According to the "rules", the ball that is farthest away from the hole is always played first. So in this scenario, the ball on the green would be played first.
What about finishing out the hole if a player in the trap gets lucky and places his ball near the cup, with only a tap-in left? Can the player finish it off before the other player tries to putt?
It depends on whether they're involved in "stroke play" or "match play". There is no penalty for playing out of turn in either plays, however, in match play the opponent does have the option to recall the stroke and make the player finish his/her shot in order.
So what is the difference between "match play" and "stroke play"?
In stroke play, the players record the total number of strokes (swings) taken in the whole round of golf. The lowest total score wins.
Players scores are usually reported in relation to par for easier comparison with the competitors scores. For example, a player whose score is three strokes over par after playing a hole, the score would appear as "+3" on the scoreboard.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the stroke, in match play the unit of scoring is the hole. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. The players play as normal. The player with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the players tie, then the hole is shared.
I hope these tips will help you while you are golfing in Bellingham. Have a great time and...
