Eliza Island

Of The San Juan Islands

Eliza Island just had to be the next San Juan Island my husband and I "needed" to explore! Why, you ask?

Crabbing season started in Bellingham Bay and my husband heard that this area was the "Crab Highway". So we set out to find out for ourselves...

The island is not far from Bellingham. (15 minutes by boat, on a good day....not too choppy in the waters.)

The island is located across the bay from Bellingham, directly east of the south tip of Lummi Island. The left island is Eliza and the one on the right is Lummi.

Approaching Eliza Island, we had to decide which side of the island to through down our crab pots. We opted for the protected northern inlet of the island. This afforded us a large, calm area to crab, fish and generally just hang out while we soaked our crab pots and waited for the crab to come to us!!!

Rounding the northern most tip of the island, we were greeted by several nice, beach-front homes. Gives one a really good understanding of the phrase "location, location, location"!

Though it doesn't show that well in this photo, (I'm no pro photographer) there are a dozen or so houses on this roughly half-mile, sandy beach; all private, no public access, privacy at it's best.

While waiting for the crab to "come to us", we decided to cruise around the island. (After all, Eliza Island is not really that big.) Coming around the southwest side, we found another inlet with still yet, more privacy-seeking-island-lovers living on the beach!

As we continued on our journey around the island, we came to the southern most tip. Much to our surprise, we found that not all island lovers prefer to live on the beach. As you can see, there were many nice houses built on the cliffs over-looking the entire southeastern Bellingham Bay area. Seclusion and privacy with a different "flavor".

The latest U.S. Census claimed only 10 year around residents on the island. I suspect most of the homes are seasonal getaways.

In addition to finding what looked like a very nice place to "get away from it all" we also found that when we went back for our crab pots we had indeed come to the right place. This truely turned out to be the "Crab Highway" for Dungeoness Crab.
