In The City of Subdued Excitement

Here's a list and brief descriptions of the Bellingham neighborhoods and some nice pictures to go along with.

As you drive along on the roads of Bellingham, WA through the all the unique neighborhoods, it really gives you a sense of "awe" and "peace."

In awe, of the natural surroundings, the year around color, the majestic trees, and the quality of life we have here in Bellingham, WA. In peace, that it is basically a safe place to live.

As was noted on my Bellingham best city list page, it is no exaggeration...it really is the best little city to live in. So, come along with me. Let's go check out all the Bellingham neighborhoods... alabama-hill-bellingham

The Alabama Hill offers many scenic views from all directions. It overlooks the beautiful Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands on one side and views of Lake Whatcom on the other.

Two small parks, St. Clair Park and Highland Park are conveniently located near the Alabama neighborhood, as well as, Bloedel Donovan Park on Lake Whatcom. Popular for walking and running is the Railroad Trail, whick runs through the middle of the area and will take you over the new pedestrian overpass that is over Alabama Street.

The Birchwood area has a great variety of restaurants and services close by in the northwest part of town. It's located close to schools and an 18-hole golf and country club with an outdoor swimming pool. Perfect area for those who like to do a lot of golfing in Bellingham.Little Squalicum Park and Shuksan Meadows Park are great playgrounds for after school fun for the children!

The Central Business District has growing prime real estate and the most blossoming Bellingham neighborhoods in the city, more and more every year with new apartments and condominiums that look-out over Bellingham Bay. The area is full of "good food", classic events, and nightlife in Bellingham, WA.

The Columbia area hosts Elizabeth Park, which is the oldest park in Whatcom county and is well-known for it's summer concerts. The area features turn-of-the-century homes and the Members of Eldridge Historical Society hosts annual tours to help support the concerts at the park. The Columbia area is very family friendly and Columbia Elementary School sits in the middle of this Bellingham neighborhood.

The Cornwall Park area resident's can boast it's convenience of location. The neighborhood is close to the hospital and other medical services. It also may rightfully boast in it's large forested park that contains horseshoe pits, frisbee golf, and a new spray-water park area for the little ones to cool down with in the summer. North of the hospital is Bug Lake. You can take your dog there for "off leash" running and playing.

edgemoor-neighborhood Edgemoor is located in the southwest corner of Bellingham, Wa. It has some of the largest houses in the city, many of them with breath-taking views of Bellingham Bay and Chuckanut Bay as well as the San Juan Islands! The area is close to the Historic Fairhaven district. As for real estate prices in town this is probably the most costly of all the Bellingham neighborhoods.

Speaking of which... The Fairhaven District was one of the four "original" towns and thrives to preserve it's historical strengths. The Village Green has become quite a popular attraction featuring outdoor films, festivals, and concerts for the community. It sits in the heart of the charming downtown Fairhaven area. The most popular of all the Bellingham neighborhoods. You'll go through downtown Fairhaven when you get on the Alaska Ferry.

geneva-neighborhood The Geneva area is, too, one of the most popular of all Bellingham neighborhoods, with over 2,300 residents. It's haven is the west shore of Lake Whatcom and home to The Firs, a Christian center which hosts Camp Firwood, a summer camp for youths and teens.

The Guide Meridian area is ever growing and the busiest of all the Bellingham neighborhoods! It is mostly commercial with the Bellis Fair Mall right off the Guide and many major shopping stores and businesses. The area residents like the easy access and variety of the shopping centers nearby. Residential housing and condominiums have rapidly kept up the pace with the businesses and has close access to Whatcom Community College.

Happy Valley is made up of single family residents, the elderly, and college students here to study at nearby Western Washington University. North of the area behind the university is the beautiful Sehome Hill Arboretum.

The Lettered Streets area sits between the Columbia area and downtown. It is one of the oldest of all Bellingham neighborhoods. Many of the homes were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The area is just minutes away to walk to downtown or to the waterfront.

Mount Baker area is vastly growing and is a multi-family area. Most of the residents can meet most of their daily needs without leaving the area! The charming Barkley Village is close by with major shopping centers, grocery stores, post office, and schools.

The Northern Heights area is located along McLeod Road, just outside the eastern city limits of Bellingham. Most of the homes in this quiet, residential area were built in the 1990's. Many of the homes are located on cul-de-sacs and all the streets have sidewalks. There is a central green space for area residents to use. Many homes in this neighborhood have full or partial views of the Canadian Cascades to the north.

The Puget area is divided by Lakeway Drive and has a host of businesses and sports complex to accent the residents. Many Bellingham youth activities are hosted in this area. Next to Cozier Elementary School is the Civic Athletic Complex that provides fields, and facilities for skateboarding, baseball, swimming, ice skating, soccer ball, and football. The Puget neighborhood is a popular hang out with the deer, too!

The Roosevelt area is located at the bottom of Alabama Hill with Alabama Street running through its center. It is the most diverse of all Bellingham neighborhoods with newer apartments and single family homes, older single family homes, offices, and car dealerships. Roosevelt Park has a playground, large field and basketball courts. Whatcom Falls Park is located along the southeast corner of the neighborhood.

The Samish Hill area is the most southeast Bellingham neighborhood. It stretches to enclose popular Lake Padden and the public golf course. Even though it is a huge neighborhood with beautiful views in some areas, there is a great sense of "community" within it's area.

sehome-arboretum The Sehome Hill area is on the "other side" of Western Washington University, which really livens things up! It gives easy access to the Arboretum, and a few small parks form the wooded backdrop for the neighborhood.

The Silverbeach area gives the residents a "summer get-away" feel. It is located at the west and north end of the 10 mile long Lake Whatcom, which is the cities water drinking source as well as recreational fun.

South Hill is the most elegant and historic of all Bellingham neighborhoods! It's location is close to everything as well as easy access to I-5. Boulevard Park is one of the city's most popular parks and sits on the bay overlooking the San Juan Islands. People love to gather here all times of the day, but mostly at sunset! From the park, also, is Taylor Dock, a boardwalk from Boulevard over to the Fairhaven District is popular for runners, walkers, and bikers.

South area is pretty much open space for now, but has hiking trails to Chuckanut Mountain and through Arroyo Park which connects to the popular Interurban Trail that runs along Chuckanut Drive and gives access to Teddy Bear Cove.

sudden-valley-bellingham Sudden Valley is a planned, private community located along the western shores of Lake Whatcom about 5 miles outside the City of Bellingham. Sudden Valley is a growing community and it attracts both year-round and vacationing residents as well as retirees. You can learn more about Sudden Valley here.

The Sunnyland neighborhood is centrally located in Bellingham. It has 2 schools and is close to Memorial Park which honors our veteran's and Cornwall Park in the northwest part of the neighborhood.

whatcom-falls-neighborhood Whatcom Falls is a lightly populated area home to the most popular park in Bellingham, WA. It is located on the northeastern part of town. It is a beautiful forested area along the Whatcom Creek Gorge with waterfalls and hiking trails.

The York area could be called Bellingham's first middle-class suburban neighborhood. It has areas of local historical interest and is centrally located in Bellingham, WA, making it attractive to many families because it is near to downtown.
