bellingham-wa-following-seattles-plastic-bag-tax
(Bellingham, WA)
According to the OPB News the next city to follow a "plastic bag tax" with Seattle will be the city of Bellingham. Hmm...
After reading "some people's views" elsewhere, I know there are some people who feel that "plastic is evil!" and that "plastic should be boycotted." However, as a tax paying consumer, I have a different view point about the city taxing people for using plastic bags at the stores!
First of all, why should the city interfere with the relationship's between the consumer and the store? Next, why should the city get a tax for those of us who choose to use plastic bags? Is this going to be made a "law"? What if the stores don't want to go this route? Will they be penalized with the city and forced to pay a fee to the city? How many stores will be forced to close their doors and how many workers out of jobs because of this weird obsession with plastic?
As for what Adam Clark said, "One suggestion was to create a bag return program so that people have a place to bring back the bags they've already used and they're also trying to get these stores to encourage customers to bring in reusable bags, the cloth bags that can be used again and again." This, in my eyes, would be a fair trial for all involved, the stores and the consumers. I wouldn't have a problem with taking my bags back, but to be taxed for using them is wrong!
I guess we all will be watching how the city of Seattle does this and how well it goes with the stores and their consumers....
