Bellingham's FIRST Pop-up Gallery
by Xan Blackburn
(Custer, WA)
The concept of the Pop-up Gallery is fairly new, but taking hold in cities all over the world. Now it's Bellingham's turn, as Sudden Gallery/Cat takes up temporary residence in the former Innate shop space on Cornwall, next to the India Grill.
>>What is a Pop-up Gallery?
A Pop-up Gallery is an artist or group of artists who move in to an empty storefront, and transform it from a dark, sad graffit-magnet into a colorful, vibrant home for independent artists to show their work.
Sudden Gallery/Cat is the first incarnation of what will be an occasional occurrence, each time with a different theme or focus, and different artists. Xan Blackburn has taken the title of Curator, and is also a contributing artist. Xan Blackburn has been creating pet art for over a decade, both portraits and commercial work. Other artists from Bellingham and points further south will also be showing work, ranging from paintings and prints, paper mache sculpture, pastels, etched tiles, stepping stones, to games, toys, gifts and cards, and practical items ... all related to cats somehow.
>>Why cats? What's up with the cats?
This first Sudden Gallery event is also a benefit for Creatures' Comfort. This organization, under the patient hands of Lois Wade, works to rescue stray and feral cats. Artists will be donating a percentage of their sales to Creatures' Comfort, and donations from guests to the Gallery will also be accepted.
In fact, donations of items useful to Creatures' Comfort will also be accepted at the Gallery. Have some extra flea medication? Cat litter? Cat food? Paper towels, bath and bed linens, dish soap, bleach, hand sanitizer, cat carriers, even scented candles would all be used and much appreciated.
Sudden Gallery/Cat opens Friday, November 27th, with a Gala Opening from 6pm - 10pm. There will be a second Gala Opening Friday, Dec. 4th, 6pm - 10pm, during Art Walk. December 6th is the final day ...
Then it’s GONE!
Hours:
* Sun-Thu 10am - 6pm * Fri 10am - 10pm * Sat 10am - 7pm

This event is to raise money for Lummi carver Felix Solomon to carve “It’s Mine” Coast Salish Story Pole which will be 10-foot horizontal story pole depicting two Native fishermen in a shovelnose canoe trying to gaff a salmon which is being pursued by a giant sea serpent. The two fishermen represent all the Natives suffering the devastation of salmon populations. The story pole project is collaboration with Nooksack Salmon Enhancement and the City of Bellingham to help educate thousands of visitors to the Whatcom Salmon Art Trail about the indigenous people of our region and the relationship between humans and our environment, particularly keystone species such as salmon. This event is a powerful statement about how our community supports local arts and business. The enthusiastic response from all the donors and performers, many of whom are local, demonstrates the interest and passion in supporting our local economy.
This event is proud to feature and promote local artists, businesses and organizations. Free Admission……………………………………………….Donations are welcome. For more info: lummistorypole@gmail.com or call Felix Solomon: 360-758-2034

Bellingham Youth Activities Campfire USA
by Amy
(Bellingham, Whatcom County)
Bellingham Youth Activities @Campfire USA
Bellingham Camp Fire Programs build caring, confident youth and future leaders.
The hallmark of the Camp Fire program is its flexibility and commitment to meeting youth and family development needs. Five essential elements drive every program we offer:
We are youth centered. We encourage the participation of entire families in fun and outcome-rich activities. We are welcoming and inclusive. We build youth and adult partnerships. We provide service to others. Camp Fire USA - Samish Council was founded in 1923 to help children grow up in healthy, age-appropriate ways. Today our council serves many children each year in clubs, after school programs, community centers, Camp Kirby, and more. Our Clubs provide a wide variety of exciting and fun activities, projects, experiences and events. The activities are limited only by the members' imaginations.
Camp Fire Club activities may consist of making things, learning about nature, taking a field trip to learn about career options, or doing service projects to become responsible citizens. Members learn about planning and decision-making, and how to work and play together. Clubs consist of three to ten children each with at least two adult leaders. They meet weekly or bi-weekly throughout the year at a time and location convenient to the leaders and youth. The club program is divided into five levels:
Little Stars Pre-School ? 3-4-5 Year olds Starflight Kindergarten, First and Second Grades Adventure Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades Discovery Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grades Horizon Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Grades There is also Teens In Action and Teen Council available in Samish Council. Day Camps - Samish Council currently offers two day camps. Kirby Day Camp is the last full week of June. It happens at Camp Kirby where kids get to explore nature. There is a different theme each year. Hovander Day Camp is the last week in July. It happens at Hovander Park in Ferndale, just a hop north of Bellingham.
There is a different theme each year. Environmental Education - builds respect through hands-on experiences in nature's classroom. The place-based learning experience allows youth a chance to apply new knowledge and skills. Students gain a greater understanding of their world and acquire the necessary tools to make decisions for a sustainable world. Learning and fun go hand in hand in nature's classroom. Sessions are usually Wednesday afternoon thru Friday morning in the spring or early fall at Camp Kirby. Camp Kirby Resident Camp is our camper-centered philosophy that teaches campers how to interact and become part of a community by planning their own program at their developmental level. Archery, climbing wall, canoes and outdoor living skills build self-esteem and confidence in campers while having the time of their lives. 1-week sessions run from July 5 thru August 15, 2009.
Volunteers are always needed!

Bakerview Nursery Customer Appreciation Night
by Karen E. Bean
(Bellingham, WA)
A taste of Whatcom honey, honey infusions, and honeys from independent Washington state beekeepers will all be found at Bakerview Nursery's Customer Appreciation Night, on Friday, November 13, from 6pm to 9pm.
Whatcom County Beekeeper, Karen E. Bean, from Brookfield Farm in Maple Falls will be participating in the event. Bean is always happy to talk about bees, honey, and the joys and challenges of beekeeping. "There's nothing like beekeeping. It's science, nature, art and just-plain-luck, all rolled up together. But it can be tough! Farming's hard enough, but farming tiny, flying, wild animals can be a bit tricky at times. I love it!"
Bean will have her own Mountain Wildflower Honey on hand, as well as honeys from three other independent Washington State beekeepers: Blackberry from Bruce Bowen Apiaries, in Mt. Vernon; Wildflower from Ron and LaVonne Babcock: Beekeepers, in Arlington; and, from Haitt and Sons Honey Company in Pasco, Alfalfa, Yellow Star Thistle; and Buckwheat Honeys.
The range of honeys were added to Bean's own honey sales about a year ago. "I had the idea while stuck in a one-man tent in a howling gale on Glacier Peak about a year ago. Somehow my thoughts just drifted to ideas of sweetness and warmth, she says. "I wanted to give people the opportunity to experience the wild diversity of honey that is available in Washington State from smaller apiaries where the beekeepers all work their own bees."
Along with the selection of Washington state honeys, Bean will also have delicately infused honeys in the flavors of: Ginger, Organic Rosemary, Dark Espresso Coffee, Vanilla Bean, and Stinging Nettle. She creates these delicately flavored honeys using a cold-infusion method, which means the honeys are never heated during the process. "It takes a while to achieve the right blend, but it's worth it."
Come on down, and taste the unique and diverse flavors of local honeys and honey infusions.
