A volunteer is someone who serves in a community or for the benefit of the natural environment simply because they choose to do so.

Many people serve through a non-profit organization, sometimes referred to as "formal", but a significant number also serve less formally, either individually or as part of a group.

By definition, the worker or one who serves, does not get paid or receive compensation for services rendered. So..."Why?", you may ask!

...The Many Rewards!

There are many rewards for serving the community.

Altruism is the most prominent reward as it is a selfless concern for the welfare of others. It is a common motivation but never the only motivation for a sustained commitment to serve.

Quality of life in serving the community because by serving others it makes your life better! This is probably the most significant motivation for serving, mixed with a big dose of altruism!

Many people feel a deep sense of peace and satisfaction by just giving back to the community that they live in for the love of it!

Some may feel a sense of duty as feeling a responsibility that comes along with citizenship.

Others have religious convictions or feel it is their "spiritual duty" to help out in the community.

Finally, just getting out and around other people is a great way to increase your social status. It is a good way to meet a lot of different people from other walks of life! Volunteering your time to the public service of others is just a great thing to do!
