Lookout Mountain Preserve

Hiking In Bellingham, WA, The City of Subdued Excitement

lookout-mountain-enterance Just down the road from the Stimpson Family Reserve Trail on the right you'll find the entrance to Lookout Mountain Preserve trail. These aren't "hard to get around" kind of trails as they are mainly fire access roads and a few small mountain bike areas that I'm not honestly sure where those lead as I head out on foot. But don't be thinking they are "too easy" as they are nothing but heading up, up, and more up! I like going up Lookout for a couple reasons. One, it's close to where I live and two, it's very "dog friendly" and no need to take extra water for your dog, there's plenty of creeks and streams along the way, even a few nice waterfalls!

lookout-sisters About 2 miles up you'll come to a first fork in the road. If you take the road to the right you'll end up on probably the most popular trail. As it causes you to climb and climb and climb some more you'll finally get around a corner and level off (let you rest) just long enough to climb some more! After the leveling out part, (and you'll know what I mean when you get there), you'll want to keep looking in through the trees for the peek-a-boo views of Lake Whatcom and complete with gorgeous views of Mount Baker and the Twin Sisters....

They aren't "spectacular" views, but they are definitley worth the "climb" up to see and the best will be yet to come and you're not far from the top.

A few more 100 yards or so up you'll find a "rock grave". I suspect that someone's dog got buried up there. I always take an extra dog bone treat and lay there. Like I said, the Lookout Mountain Preserve is "dog friendly". I reckon it was someone's beloved fellow hiker! If it bothers you, just keep walking on by...

lookout-bellingham Not far from there is the reward of a breath-taking view of Lake Whatcom, the beautiful City of Subdued Excitement, Bellingham, Washington, and if you are there on a clear day like I was with my camera, you can see gorgeous views as far as the Canadian Rockies!

This area of Lookout Mountain Preserve is pretty spectacular! You can see for miles and miles and miles...Oh ya!

That's about as good as this road gets. You can go up the end of the road which is approximately about less than a quarter mile. It's a good area to stop and eat if you planned a packed lunch on your journey. Not really necessary as it only takes a couple hours to get up there. You'll also see where some "may have" camped overnight.

Lookout Mountain Preserve Part 2

lookout-waterfalls If you go back down to the trail on the left in the fork in the road, you'll hear the waterfalls and won't be too far from it! You can see if from the trail, but to get closer, at your own risk, you'll have to get off trail. It's really pretty and it's one of few waterfalls that you will come across. That creek, I believe, flows into Lake Whatcom. If you're full of energy or want to keep exploring Lookout, you can keep on this trail (fire road). Before getting to the top on this trail, you'll come to another fork in the road. I'm not sure (yet) where the road to the right goes, but if you plan on going to the left and get to an end, plan for a whole day. It's about 6 a mile journey to the end of the road. lookout-mountain-4 You'll pass a couple numbers in red painted on trees I believe are mile markers. One will be a 3 and the other a 4. With this in mind, it's about 2 more miles or so up to the top. You'll end up at a place where there will be a few cell phone towers. Nothing spectacular and nothing worth viewing, but truely a good workout as it, too, goes up and up all the way. It took us about 6 hours up and back to the entrance...Enjoy hiking Lookout Mountain Preserve!

To get to this particular trail head (North Chuckanut Trail Head), take Old Fairhaven Parkway and turn south on Chuckanut Drive. Just past Samish Road the parking area will be on the left. Can't miss it...Happy Trails!!!
